Several “stars”, highlighted in this impressive history of both Britannia and Vancouver’s East End, attended the event. Among the former alums were Dave Barrett, Bill Esson, Chandra Madhosingh, Ted Nitta, Peter Young, Peter Joe, Larry Doyle and Bill Reiter. Co-editor, Ray Culos spoke eloquently and passionately. This book is a must read – an impressive, eye-catching coffee-table book - interesting, entertaining, history building, and a legacy unto itself.

Vancouver's Britannia Secondary Celebrates its 100th Birthday

BRITANNIA RULES! In the heart of Vancouver’s east side, at Britannia Secondary School on May 16 and 17, 2008, thousands of alumni, former teachers and staff, as well as today’s students, teachers and friends will converge to chant “BRITANNIA RULES” and “GO, BRUINS!” Britannia’s halls will bustle as never before. Graduates from the 1930’s to the 2000’s share a common purpose as they mix and mingle, reminiscing and reconnecting with old classmates and friends. What a century it’s been.

The 100-day countdown to the Gala weekend began with a ribbon-cutting event on February 6, attended by several key Britannia supporters. Former Bruins and distinguished educators Norm Lee, Neva Morley, and Lou Rossi, led the charge. Excited students, supportive staff, energetic alums, and other well-wishers joined the throng, each receiving and wearing proudly, the green and red wristband, to mark the May 16 & 17 Gala dates, and to celebrate a Britannia Secondary School milestone.

During its first hundred years, Vancouver’s oldest secondary school has experienced massive changes. Today’s site, combined with the Britannia Community Services Complex, has facilities and programs for seniors through daycare alike and speaks to its unique and individual character. John Minichiello, former Canadian Track and Field Coach, Britannia Social Studies Department Head and Britannia Principal, steered the creation and construction of this facility while advising The Association to Tackle Adverse Conditions (ATTAC), a community group of politically savvy Britannia grads, teachers and citizens, who achieved their goal of diverting a major downtown highway through the Venable Street corridor. One of these students, Enzo Guerriero, is now Executive Director of the Britannia centre.

Taking a walk through her hallways one gains a sense of Britannia’s past through a peek at the accomplishments of some of her graduates. Britannia athletes boast 40 provincial championships with three provincial athletes of the year: Wayne Chow, Wrestling; Amber Hall, Basketball; Diane Murray, Volleyball. Basketball, field hockey, football, rugby, table tennis, volleyball, wrestling, and waltz championships round the field of an impressive legacy.

Individual student accomplishment and successes attest to the quality education, personal commitment, and influence of past Britannia educators. In Remembering Britannia -100 Years of Achievement, a memoir book co-authored and designed by graduates Clive Cocking, Ray Culos, and Amy Pon, former educators such as Adele Case, Mike Evans, Victor Guy, Chandra Madhosingh, Shirley Mayse, John Minichiello and Bill Vance are recognized. These educators, as well as countless others, inspired students not only in the classroom but also extracurricularly through activities they sponsored or coached, or simply the influence of their personal qualities and high expectations. Today, Britannia teachers continue to exemplify the standard of excellence of their forebears.

Remembering Britannia highlights some of its graduate’s accomplishments as well. Few schools can boast as impressive a list as those of the Britannia’s graduates found within these covers. Angelo Branca, star defense lawyer and later BC supreme court and appeal court judge, Vera Shaw, BC’s first female pharmacy owner, physicists Dr. Hin Lew and Dr. Shuichi Kusaka, Tong Louie, London Drug’s entrepreneur, and Barbara Howard, a member of Canada’s 1938 British Empire Games team in Austria. The Barrett brothers, Dave who was BC’s New Democratic Party (NDP) premier in 1972, his brother, Isadore (“Izzy”), former Director of the US Southwest Fisheries Science Center, and Bill Esson, once chief justice of the BC Supreme Court, are also featured.

Another brother duo, The Honorable Frank Iacobucci and his brother, John, graced Britannia’s halls in the 50s. Prominent Vancouver architect, Larry Doyle, top Toronto Star music and dance critic, Bill Littler, and University of Toronto professor, Tom Wilson, hail from this era, too. Enter the 1960s and 1970s and graduates distinguished through their creative focus. Among these are Simon Chang, a top Canadian fashion designer, Ray Mah, a top image maker and graphic designer, Maysie Hoy, film editor of note, Bill Reiter, comedic actor, and Paul Yee, author. Another graduate, Carole (Henderson) Carpenter heads a unique children’s study program at York University. Accolades and accomplishments continue into 21st Century with medal winning performances from Carrie Jung at the World Transplant Games and by May Seto, an adjunct professor, in the mechanical engineering department at Dalhousie University and a Canadian national defense scientist.

Prepare for an exciting and unforgettable time when Britannia’s graduates, educators, and friends, both past and present, gather. The centennial celebration begins on Friday evening at Britannia and continues through Saturday’s Open House. Visit old school haunts. See how Britannia has changed. Participate fully with your Passport as a future keepsake. Bill Reiter and Bob Fitzpatrick, the reunion’s chair, MC the reunion finale. The Gala event, at the Agrodome Saturday evening, stars Dal Richards and his Orchestra, Federico “Ricky” Fuoco with “Fire”, the SoulMateS, David Steele and the Just Funk Band and Britannia’s very own 2008 Chorus and Band.

Britannia has always been more than a school where teachers and students meet; it has been and will continue to be a facility greater than the sum of its parts—a fusion of all that is best. Come, visit Britannia and see for yourself.

Feel free to join a growing list of former grads supporting the Britannia Reunion and the Centennial Fund through donations, individually as Friends of Britannia, or through a specific sponsorship such as Gold Sponsor such as Sunrise Soya Foods, and/or as a Silver Sponsor such as Delta Land Development Ltd.

BRITANNIA’S RIBBON-CUTTING

A 100-DAY COUNTDOWN TO THE GALA EVENT

Energetic students roared their approval as several VIPs and former alums simultaneously cut the bright, broad red ribbon spanning the width of their school auditorium stage Wednesday afternoon, February 6, 2008. This ribbon-cutting event formally marked the 100-day countdown to their upcoming centennial celebration May 16 and 17, 2008.

Barbara Howard, a graduate and member of Canada’s 1938 British Empire Games team to Australia, described the Britannia of her day, her experiences thereafter as a Vancouver teacher for forty-three years, and her pride in her school then and now. John Minichiello, former Britannia teacher and school principal, carried the baton from the 60s through the late 90s. He described the political climate and events resulting in the creation of the Britannia Community Services Complex, and the many and varied athletic and academic successes of Britannia students throughout its history. Joe Ferrara, a Kitsilano Secondary School counsellor, recounted his high school life as school president and athlete at Britannia, as a young political activist and ultimately, for thirteen years, a Britannia school counsellor. Other VIPs such as Bill Reiter, well known comedic actor, Barry Houlihan former Britannia high school president and professional football great, current BC MLAs Richard Lee, and Shane Simpson were also in attendance supporting their alma mater. Dal Richards, who will be a key entertainer at the Saturday night Gala Event, rounded off the list of honoured guests.

These graduates, other successes and events impacting on Britannia Secondary School are featured in a memoir book especially written for this event. The book, entitled Remembering Britannia -100 Years of Achievement, is co-edited by graduates Clive Cocking and Ray Culos, and designed by graduate, Amy Pon.

Join former grads supporting the Britannia Reunion and the Centennial Fund through donations, individually as Friends of Britannia, or as a Gold Sponsor such as Sunrise Soya Foods, Silver Sponsor such as Delta Land Development Ltd., or Bronze sponsors such as Fets Bar & Grill and Willis Louie.

September Launch!

Friday, September 28th, 2007

It was an official success with a practically full auditorium. We officially launched Britannia's 100th birthday at the launch with a school assembly, VIPs, and a special delegation of Japanese visitors remembering Senji Yamamoto, a Britannia student of 1909. There was also a memorable presentation of the school through the decades for the audience.

To end this inaugural ceremony, the Centennial Committee’s chair, Bob Fitzpatrick, unfurled school banners depicting Britannia Now and Then to thunderous applause. Thank you to all those who made it such a success.
